When I was a child, growing up in Georgetown, Ontario (1955-1964), my parents were struggling financially. One way that my mother devised to economize was to bake meatloaf cut with breadcrumbs. A lot of breadcrumbs.
And Mom also forced my sister and me to devour lima beans and wax beans as a side dish. These legumes were invariably soggy.
As children, such humble repasts made us gag.
Fast forward to this month, when my dear wife Anne was diagnosed with brain cancer and hospitalized for emergency brain surgery.
The large malignant tumour in her orbitofrontal cortex and its subsequent surgical removal have affected her gustatory and olfactory cortex. For Anne, food tastes and smells are much more intense than ever before.
In the hospital, she craved and devoured meatloaf with single-minded determination. It was her favourite sickbay sustenance, especially when accompanied by wax beans.
The hospital staff at Ottawa Civic Hospital wanted to award her a medal for being the first patient ever to give their institutional edibles a five-star review.
Anne will learn next week the prognosis for her disease and what fate awaits her on the therapeutic front. In the meantime, she will tenaciously seek gourmet meatloaf in all of our local butcher shops and delis.

Lorsque j’étais enfant, à Georgetown, en Ontario (1955-1964), mes parents avaient des difficultés financières. Pour économiser, ma mère avait élaboré une méthode qui consistait à faire cuire du pain de viande coupé avec de la chapelure. Beaucoup de chapelure.
Maman nous obligeait également, ma sœur et moi, à dévorer des haricots de Lima et des haricots beurre en guise d’accompagnement. Ces légumineuses étaient invariablement détrempées.
Enfants, ces humbles repas nous donnaient la nausée.
Ce mois-ci, on a diagnostiqué à ma chère épouse Anne un cancer du cerveau et elle a été hospitalisée d’urgence pour une opération du cerveau.
L’importante tumeur maligne dans son cortex orbitofrontal et l’ablation chirurgicale qui s’en est suivie ont affecté ses cortex gustatif et olfactif. Pour Anne, les goûts et les odeurs des aliments sont beaucoup plus intenses qu’auparavant.
À l’hôpital, elle avait envie de pain de viande et le dévorait avec une détermination sans faille. C’était sa nourriture préférée à l’infirmerie, surtout lorsqu’elle était accompagnée de haricots beurre.
Le personnel de l’Hôpital Civique d’Ottawa voulait lui décerner une médaille pour avoir été le premier patient à donner une note de cinq étoiles à leurs aliments institutionnels.
Anne connaîtra la semaine prochaine le pronostic de sa maladie et le sort qui lui sera réservé sur le plan thérapeutique. En attendant, elle cherchera avec ténacité des pains de viande gastronomiques dans toutes les boucheries et charcuteries locales.
