Mellow Yellow Anne: Brain Cancer and Strangely Chilling Out

My wife Anne is currently undergoing three weeks of intensive radiation and chemotherapy  treatments.

The treatments are leaving her extremely nauseous and totally exhausted.

But for lengthy periods, she is preternaturally mellow, chilled out, totally detached from the trials and tribulations of everyday life and certainly from the mediatized horrors with which we mortals are perpetually pelted.

Anne and I call these her “Mellow Yellow” moments, after the  pop song that was a hit in 1966 for the Scottish singer/ songwriter Donavan Leitch.

“In slang, “mellow” primarily signifies a state of being relaxed, calm, and happy, often associated with a lack of stress or tension. It can also describe a mood or atmosphere that is pleasant and easygoing. Additionally, in some contexts, “mellow” can refer to the effects of substances like alcohol or cannabis, indicating a state of relaxed intoxication.”

This morning Anne was particularly mellowed out. She arose from bed at 2:15 a.m., intent on taking a shower and fixing her hair, which is falling out in clumps, before heading off for her 9:20 a.m. treatment at a local hospital about an hour away. Without these elaborate preparations, she feels “like a scarecrow.”

When I pointed out that 2:15 a.m. was an excessively early start, she replied simply, “Oh well. Mellow Yellow.”

Anne has been stricken with glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer. Her life expectancy is about 12 to 18 months.

So these Mellow Yellow moments are ineffably precious and delicious, like an unsolicited special delivery of ripe celestial fruit.
