The Fiery Beauty of Fall

I wrote this sonnet to  underscore the symbolic significance of the fall season, in the life of our family in particular  this year.

A Sonnet on Autumn’s Vibrant Finale

In autumn’s breath, a wild inferno glows,

The maples flare in scarlet, gold, and flame.

Each trembling leaf its final glory shows,

A fleeting fire—no two are quite the same.

The birch and oak, in splendid, bold array,

Flaunt rust and amber in the waning light.

Their dazzling pageant heralds cold’s decay,

Embracing dusk that silences the bright.

Yet underneath this riot, death takes hold,

For soon the branches empty, stark and bare.

The wind will sweep away the red and gold,

And hush the woods with icy, sombre air.

O autumn, burn before the bitter freeze—

In dying, colour lives, and hearts appease.

Robert
