The Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour 2024

My book titled My Time with You Has Been Short but Very Funny is a candidate for the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour, also known as the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour or just the Leacock Medal, is an annual Canadian literary award presented for the best book of humour written in English by a Canadian writer, published or self-published in the previous year.

Stephen P. H. Butler Leacock FRSC was a Canadian teacher, political scientist, writer, and humourist. Between the years 1915 and 1925, he was the best-known English-speaking humourist in the world. He is known for his light humour along with criticisms of people’s follies. Wikipedia

As you can see in the photo above and here, Leacock also sported an excellent moustache.

Below you will also find interesting links about the award and learn who the 70 or so candidates are. I am a decrepit nag among a collection of thoroughbreds.

Here is what the Leacock award committee published about my candidacy:

Robert McBryde is a professional translator with a master’s degree in English literature and has just returned from over two years in Dijon France to live in Ottawa, where the winters are unbearably cold. A product of Toronto, Ontario, educated in both Canada and Switzerland, he taught literature and theatre at the junior college level in Quebec City for 35 years and worked as a writer/ broadcaster for CBC radio for 10 years, honing his storytelling skills through a weekly recounting of absurd yet poignant tales of everyday life, which a number of listeners urged him to publish.  His first book, My Time with You Has Been Short but Very Funny, is a belated response to those requests and includes an array of other comical and edgy sketches besides. The book is infused with frenetic humour along with undertones of wistfulness and edgy sadness. In a series of sketches spanning two continents and seven decades, the author introduces readers to a rollicking cast of characters from everyday life, including the iconic Pesticide Pete and Barbecue Billy, as well as a series of off-kilter incidents, both chucklesome and disquieting. Robert hopes that his two sons, who figure prominently in these narratives, will not find these tales to be flat seltzer.
