Anne’s Smile

A poem of resilience and wonder

Anne lies beneath the shadow,

the whisper of brain cancer curling in her mind.

Yet each morning, she greets the world

with a smile – warm taffy, slow and sweet,

suffusing everything around her with serene light.

Her smile – unbidden, luminous –

drifts across rooms, illuminating corners

where hope might falter.

It is not the practiced façade she wore

before doctors named the darkness.

Now, it rises from somewhere deeper,

a spontaneous radiance, unposed.

We marvel at its gentle force,

the inner root that has grown strong

even as her body yields.

Her smile, a guiding light,

steadfast, genuine, lifting others

toward wonder, toward life.

In her presence, we learn

that sweetness is not untouched by sorrow,

but shaped by it and made to shine.

If you feel like keeping track of Anne’s cancer journey, I’m chronicling it in prose and poetry here:
