The Indomitable Anne and the Great Hat Rebellion
Or, How to Outwit a Vicious Canadian Winter with Sheer Stubbornness
Let me tell you about my beloved Anne, whose spirit is as unyielding as the Canadian Shield and whose relationship with winter headgear is more complicated than a double-double at Timmies. Most mortals, upon being handed a diagnosis as grave as brain cancer, would wrap themselves in layers of fleece, wool, and perhaps even the mythical toque, particularly when the January winds howl like outraged hockey fans denied a playoff run. Not Anne. Pushing her trusty walker, she staggers around our neighbourhood, hatlessly defiant, her blossoming post-chemo hair – resilient, wiry coils with a personality all their own – daring Jack Frost to do his worst. To her, a hat is not a shield, but a betrayal: of pride, of comfort, and of the small, unruly miracles sprouting from her scalp.

Why won’t she wear a hat, you ask? Is it vanity, stubbornness, or simple aesthetics? Oh, gentle reader, it’s all that and more. Anne claims – no, proclaims! – that to be “be-hatted” is to be shackled, to surrender the wild freedom of her new hair to the tyranny of acrylic knits. She insists a hat feels “like a damp raccoon clinging to your head,” and in the eternal battle of style versus frostbite, she’d much rather let her emerging curls wage their glorious war against the elements. It’s a hyperbolic stand-off: Anne versus Winter, pride versus practicality, the blossoming coils against the icy north wind. If stubbornness were insulation, she’d be the warmest soul in all of Canada.
I’m trying to get Anne to lend her bare head to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s Hats for Hope campaign.

And I just learned that she will have a reprieve from headgear; the Foundation is temporarily out of hats. More are on order, and there are mittens and hoodies available as we speak!

This year, actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, best known for his award-winning role as Appa in Kim’s Convenience and for his appearances in The Mandalorian and Avatar: The Last Airbender, is joining the campaign as an ambassador to help amplify awareness nationwide.
